Citation Style Guides - Sac State Library provides this explanation:

A style guide illustrates the accepted format for citing your references in term papers, theses, articles, etc.
The business disciplines have not adopted or endorsed a specific citation style. Your business professors may select any of these commonly used styles:
  • APAAmerican Psychological Association or APA style is widely accepted in the Social Sciences.
  • ChicagoThe Chicago Manual of Style presents two basic documentation systems: (1) notes and bibliography and (2) author-date. The notes and bibliography style is preferred by many in the humanities, including those in literature, history, and the arts. But some in the accounting field use author-date style.
  • MLAThe Modern Language Association or MLA style is widely accepted in the humanities.
  • Additional style guidesThis lists style guides the natural sciences, law, math, etc. Examples for accounting journals
